Equally diverting -- and unusual -- is "Celebremos el Niño" by the Rose Ensemble, the early-music Twin Cities vocal group headed by Jordan Sramek, whose latest record explores 17th-century Mexican music, much of it based on the street and dance music of African slaves in the Spanish colonies. Delicate but lively, alternately sad and festive, the music is given subtle support by period instruments and sung with immaculate intonation and lively rhythms.
