IL POVERELLO: The Life & Deeds of St. Francis of Assisi
A delightful collection of over 300 years of vocal and instrumental music highlighting the life and legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi. The resault of three years of scholarly research, this recording features a generous helping of medieval Italian instrumental dances (played on bagpipes, rebec, vielle, harp, recorder, pipe, and several percussion instruments), as well as early Italian-language spiritual and processional songs, lush choral motets from the Venetian School and soaring plainchant written in honor of one history’s most beloved saints. What the critics say
"This very talented dozen from Minneapolis have a sound that is
well-balanced, clear, and crisp, with soaring highs, rich, resonating
lows, and bright, strong voices in between.
Their singing is also deeply felt and emotionally complex, diving far
below the surface in their exploration of the spiritual essence of the
material. They also have an impeccable sense of timing, perhaps best shown
off in "Veni Creator Spiritus" by Gilles de Bins dit Binchois (c. 1400-1460).
The syncopated rhythms of this invitation to the Holy Spirit, combined
with the music's daring dissonant chords, make this number a standout."
"Seasons of Angels" is self-produced, but don't be afraid; the
recording is of the highest quality."
