St. Hildegard von Bingen and the Minstrel’s Song of Songs

February 2013

with special guests, Priscilla Smith (early wind instruments), Greg Ingles (slide trumpet and sackbut)

Candlelight sets the tone for this new program of medieval chant and polyphony from Germany and France. Give in to the lush and contemplative sounds of a Gregorian Vespers service from the 13th century Benedictine Abbey of St. Emmeram in Regensburg, while poet-minstrel Frauenlob’s exquisite “Song of Songs” meets the unearthly music and mystic poetry of the newly canonized Abbess and Doctor, Hildegard von Bingen. We’ll celebrate our own musical history in a “15th birthday” performance of William Beckstrand’s Tears of the Soul (written for The Rose Ensemble in 1998), and feature guest instrumentalists in 14th century court music for recorder, slide trumpet, shawm, harp, and psaltery.
